Vivo Apex comes with an in-screen fingerprint sensor that spans half the screen

Vivo has shown off the world’s first phone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor and the concept proved to work as expected. This feature was shown on the Vivo X20 Plus UD, where users will have to place their finger on the fingerprint icon at the middle-bottom of the phone. Vivo was perhaps not satisfied with just having one location to unlock the phone, they brought another concept phone called the Apex which makes the fingerprint detection area to a larger area on the screen.

Although it does not take half the screen as what Vivo is claiming it to be “Half-screen in-display fingerprint scanning” it does take up a rather generation portion of the screen to authenticate your fingerprint making it much easier access the phone. You can even go as far as using two fingers as an authentication or three if you are worried about security. Similar to the X20 Plus UD, the technology will require an OLED screen in order to light up your fingerprints so the sensor can pick it up. The phone’s screen spends the entire body, and one question comes to mind, “where are the earpiece and front camera?”

The company took an interesting approach with this and made the entire screen vibrate to produce sound, making it act like an earpiece, and the front-facing camera will slide up from the top of the phone, eliminating the need of a notch.

Like all other concept devices, there is no official release date or pricing of the phone as Vivo is just showing the technology and the potential that future smartphones could have. Right now, all we can do is wait and see if this will become an official phone or Vivo is still going back to the drawing board with this concept.
