Vivo already has a working prototype of an under-screen fingerprint sensor

The biggest news this year is will the fingerprint scanner be under the screen for the new iPhone, while that is still a big hype, Vivo has driven past the hype train and created the technology that can place the fingerprint sensor under the screen. Join together with Qualcomm, they set to reveal this new technology at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai.

The tech is called Vivo Under Display, where the sensor can be placed under glass, an OLED screen or even aluminium. This is thanks to the ultrasonic sensor that emits ultrasonic sound waves which can penetrate the skin of your finger to capture a precise 3D image of your fingerprint. Vivo’s sensor is said to be able to penetrate 1.3mm of OLED, 525 micrometres of aluminium or 800 micrometres of glass where Qualcomm’s previous version of this scanner could only penetrate 400 micrometres of glass and 300 micrometres capacitive scanners. Another advantage of this sensor is that it is not affected by ambient light and will work with wet fingers and sweat marks and they have another working underwater coming soon.

This might sound very promising, with a video and proof of concept working, sadly, Vivo has not announced an actual product that would be equipped with this sensor, but they do have plans to integrate this technology into future devices.
