WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption to its services not too long ago and now, Viber is doing so as well.
Viber COO Michael Shmilov has issued a statement saying that the company “takes users’ securiy and privacy very seriously.” “Because of this, we have spent a long time working on ths latest update to ensure that our users have the most sophisticated security available and maximum control over their communications. We will continue to make this an ongoing priority as digital communications evolves,” says Shmilov.
End-to-end encryption is expected to be available as part of Viber’s 6.0 update, which is stated to be rolling out “over the coming weeks.” Viber will be colour-coding various levels of encryption that represents how secure the participants in a chat are. Viber will also be adding a “hidden chat” feature with the 6.0 update, allowing users to hide specific one-to-one or group chats from the main screen. You can only gain access to these chats through a four digit PIN, or in the case of iOS, via Touch ID.
