Despite the controversy surrounding the service, Uber has reported that it has begun to see profitability in key markets in the region.
According to a report from TechCrunch, Uber has told them that the ride-sharing service is now profitable in Singapore and the Philippines, with other countries in the region being close behind.
With Southeast Asia now showing signs of profitability, Uber has stated that it has decided to abandon its “land grab” approach to the region. Now, the company is looking at introducing new products and services to corner various parts of the market. Some of the new services that will be introduced to Southeast Asia includes UberEats, UberPool and UberMoto. UberEats, a food delivery service, has already been introduced to Singapore, with Uber hinting that it may be coming to Bangkok as well. UberPool, a carpooling service, is already available in Singapore and Jakarta. UberMoto, a ride-sharing service using motorcycles, has been beta-tested in Thailand, but has been reportedly banned in May. Uber is looking to expand UberMoto to Indonesia, although only time will tell if the service manages to be legal.
Seeing as Uber is now looking to expand their services in the region, it is highly likely that some of the features that has been beta-tested in the United States will be coming to our shores soon.
