U Mobile, Waze and SMART Tunnel partner to offer steady GPS connection in tunnel

U Mobile has partnered with Waze and SMART Tunnel to offer uninterrupted GPS connection when they’re driving through the dual-purpose tunnel.

Adding Waze Beacons to SMART Tunnel

Losing connection when driving through tunnels has always been a common problem, but the new partnership helps users overcome the issue. The three companies cooperated to install Bluetooth-enabled hardware devices known as Waze Beacons. There are currently 240 of these devices along the 5.2km tunnel, and users just have to turn on their Bluetooth to prevent their Waze from being disrupted.

“Users will also be able to get updates on traffic jams, road closures or accidents that may have happened inside the tunnel and its surroundings, enhancing drivers’ safety as well,” said Mohd Noor Mohd Ali, Chief Operating Officer of SMART.

Stable GPS connection, not just for U Mobile users

This partnership doesn’t just benefit U Mobile users; in fact, it’s applicable to all no matter what telco provider you’re using. Waze also plans to expand the new program nationwide and across Southeast Asia.
