U Mobile and Huawei Malaysia have signed a Letter of Intent to bring forward 5G technology in the country – ironically, the signing took place in Dongguan China, at Huawei’s HQ. But I digress.

According to a press release sent by the telco, the collaboration will see the two entities will work together to prep for the roll out of 5G networks next year. There will also be live trials conducted in the country – however, more details haven’t been shared yet.

CEO of Huawei Malaysia Michael Yuan said that U Mobile will leverage on Huawei 5G’s technology which includes Gigabit speeds, low latencies as well as the existing vast communication networks in the country.

This could be a big deal as Huawei will aim to regain some footing in Malaysia after losing out on access to GMS. With their 5G experiential zone already set up in Pavilion KL, Huawei looks set to be the pioneers of the networking tech in the country. U Mobile also looks to gain from the collaboration – surveys by OpenSignal have consistently shown the telco to offer poor network speeds and experience, however they offer some of the cheapest data plans in Malaysia.

With this, one can hope that U Mobile will be one of the early adopters of 5G connectivity and perhaps continue to offer affordable products when 5G rolls out to the masses eventually.
