TM to make fixed line broadband affordable and faster next quarter

Telekom Malaysia (TM) has made a statement today to the media its initiative to revise broadband prices in support of the government’s aspirations. A few days ago, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo has made a statement that broadband prices will be down by at least 25% by year end, this is one of the fulfillment that the Pakatan Harapan government has made in its election manifesto and it is anticipated due to the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP) that came into force on June 8. Below is the statement from TM:

We wish to inform that Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has had several engagements in an ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Communications & Multimedia Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to reiterate its support of the Government’s aspiration regarding affordable broadband services at higher speed for the nation to increase its competitiveness; and on TM’s proposed initiatives to implement the same. Further details on the initiatives will be announced by TM within the next quarter.

Currently, the most affordable high speed fixed broadband plan from TM would be it’s 10Mbps Unifi Lite plan at RM129/month, and it goes all the way up to RM329/month for the 100Mbps Unifi Pro plan, entry-level Streamyx ADSL plans are still present from RM110/month for 1Mbps of speed, which is rather unattractive when compared to mobile broadband.

Let’s hope TM will finally be able to game up its offerings, and while we shouldn’t expect prices to drop 25%, let’s hope at least TM could at least increase the broadband speeds that it is currently offering.
