The Mi Max is Xiaomi's largest phone yet

After countless leaks, the Xiaomi Mi Max has finally been unveiled at Xiaomi’s Beijing event, and the phablet is definitely as huge as it was rumored to be.

Although Xiaomi claims the Mi Max to still be able to fit nicely into pockets, the 6.44-inch display proves that this phone isn’t built for every consumer out there. But such a large screen is definitely immersive, as mentioned by the company. Also, the device weighs 203g and boasts a 7.5mm slim form factor, which are pretty decent for a phone of that size. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 or 652 processor and 3GB or 4GB of RAM, depending on which model you pick. The Xiaomi Mi Max also comes with three storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively, and can be expanded via the micro SD slot.

On the camera side of things, the Mi Max sports a 16MP PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) primary camera which might be the same one seen on Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 5 handset. The selfie shooter is of 5MP, with an 85 degree wide angle. A fingerprint sensor can be found on the back of the Mi Max, plus the phone comes with a hybrid tray that can house either a micro SD card and a SIM card or two SIM cards. The Mi Max joins the ranks of phones packing mammoth batteries, considering the fact that it needs more juice to power that colossal display alongside its internals. Xiaomi has assigned a 4,850mAh battery, which on paper is sufficient for the Mi Max.

The Mi Max will be the first among Xiaomi’s line of phones to be operating the latest MIUI 8, which was introduced alongside the phone itself. MIUI 8 features an overall redesigned color, which still reminds us of the iOS interface, plus Font Mi Lanting, fonts designed for more comfortable reading. MIUI 8 also includes improvement of certain apps such as Notes, which can be secured via a passcode and fingerprint. Also, the MIUI 8 Scanner which consists of features such as scanning barcodes and snapping pictures to shop for similar items online, although these features are most likely to be limited to China. The Gallery app has also seen a couple of added features such as quick share controls, the ability to crop, add filters, captions and music to videos, including doodling on pictures plus adding stickers. MIUI 8 will also be available on other Mi devices such as the Mi 2/2S/3/4/4C/4S/5 and all Redmi and Mi Note series.

The Xiaomi Mi Max will be offered in three models, with their prices stated below:

  • 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, Snapdragon 650   – RMB 1499 (RM931.10)
