The DxO One camera turns your iPhone into a powerful point and shoot

The iPhone already takes great pictures out of the box, but if you are craving for more megapixels and sick of the iPhone camera’s f/2.4 aperture but still don’t really want to carry a heavy DSLR with you, the DxO One is a camera that you may want to consider buying, at $600, it connects to your iPhone’s Lightning connector and you can start shooting with a f/1.8 20-megapixel lens right away.

The DxO one has an LED display that shows you the camera’s operation mode and battery life, it also has a MicroSD slot that lets you save your photos. In technical aspects, the 1-inch 20.2-megapixel f/1.8 sensor has a good 32mm focal length, not the widest out there but if should be good for most travelling shots. The camera has an ISO range from 100-51200 which is good for low light photography and takes videos at 1080p resolution with 30 frames per second. Most impressively, this little gadget has an extremely fast 1/8000 shutter speed and even takes RAW images if you want it to.

One of the things to love about the accessory is that you are able to twist the device and treat it like a front facing camera, which reminds us of the Nokia 3250 that has a twisting keypad with a built-in camera module. There is also a two-stage shutter button on the top which makes taking pictures more convenient and camera-like. If you don’t have an iPhone, you can still pretty much use it as a standalone camera since it has its own builtin battery that offers an estimated practical 200 shots per charge. According to DxO, the device doesn’t rely on and drain your iPhone’s battery when connected to it.

DxO is currently available for pre-order in the US and while this isn’t exactly a cheap accessory, it does deliver some advantages over some standard point and shoots and eventually better pictures on your iPhone and it is definitely much more portable than lens style cameras  or your DSLR, I just hope DxO will consider Android support one day.
