If you’re born in the 1980s, you should be aware that cassettes and floppy disks are the most biggest things in storage technology and Sony is one of the companies making them. Today, although floppy disks are history but cassette tape still plays a major role in enterprises on performing data backups, Sony has therefore introduced the world’s highest density tape that records at 148Gb/in2, which makes up to a storage space of 185TB!

The production of this tape will be in collaboration with IBM, and we definitely won’t be seeing this cassette tape selling on retail shelves since its meant for commercial use. With the increasing demand and popularity of high speed SSDs, we doubt if enterprise would want to spend on a single 185TB tape since this isn’t going to be cheap as well.
