Sharp Aquos S2 launched in China with slim bezel front

While bezel-less display smartphones are on the rise, there have been little to no such smartphones in the entry level and mid range spectrum. The last known handset to launch with a near bezel-less display is the LG Q6, which was probably the first non-flagship device with such a feature. Sharp has added another handset to that equation.

The Sharp Aquos S2 is the company’s latest smartphone to date. Sharp made the headlines approximately three years ago with what was probably the first ever “bezel-less” smartphone – the Sharp Aquos Crystal. But the phone had a really huge ugly chin below the screen. The Sharp Aquos S2 has improved upon that with a less obvious chin below the display, and a more trendy 18:9 display aspect ratio, measuring at 5.5-inches in Full HD+ resolution. The display reminds us of the Essential Phone, and potentially the upcoming iPhone 8.

Underneath the hood is a Snapdragon 630 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is also a premium model with a Snapdragon 660 chipset, 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The Sharp Aquos S2 sports a dual rear camera setup which sounds impressive on paper – 12MP + 8MP sensors with Dual Pixel technology along with another 8MP shooter on the front. The phone packs a 3,020mAh battery.

The Sharp Aquos S2 will probably remain as a China exclusive device for the foreseeable future. The regular variant will carry a price tag of CNY 2,499 (RM 1597.52) while the premium model costs CNY 3,599 (RM 2236.79).
