Samsung announces mass-production of 12GB RAM for smartphones

Giz China

At this point in time, do smartphones really need more than 6GB RAM? A device with 8GB of RAM is becoming increasingly common, while phones like the Vivo Nex Dual Display come with a whopping 10GB RAM; but that’s understandable since the phone needs it for seamless transitions between both screens.

In general, 6GB RAM would do, but Samsung’s looking way ahead into the future by announcing that they’ve begun mass-producing 12GB LPDDR4X RAM modules for smartphones.

To put into perspective, a mid-ranged gaming PC only needs about 12 to 16GB of RAM, so for smartphones to come with just as much memory may seem like an overkill – but I digress; Samsung’s upcoming LPDDR4X RAM modules are reportedly capable of 34.1GB/s transfer rates.

So, with these new RAM modules, you can expect speedy respond times and seamless usage experience. When you take into account the new wave of foldable phones that are on the horizon, 12GB of RAM could be essential for flexible phones to function properly.
