Reports show that Malaysians spend more on phones, than other electronics

According to reports from GfK Point of Sales tracking, 37 percent of smartphones sold in Malaysia had screen sizes ranging from 5-inch to 5.6-inches, compared to the 21 percent in the previous year making it the fastest growing screen size demand in the past 12 months. GfK tracks goods from consumer electronics, major and small domestic appliances, photography and information technology, they found that out of all of these, telecommunications is where consumers spend the most.

In the reports, it is found that consumers bought around RM6.8 billion worth of smartphones compared to the RM5.4 billion in 2015 and the biggest contributor are the mid-range models costing between RM900 to RM1,050. This was thanks to Chinese smartphone brands that sparked the demand for mobile phones last year, which is also the highest number of new smartphones brands entering the market.

In a separate study the company conducted, they also found that the live cycle of smartphones have significantly reduced, as newer models are being introduced at a faster rate. This means that brands have a shorter time to market their smartphones, making it vital for companies to understand their market to cater to those specifics and get the most returns from their lineup.
