The Redmi Y1 marks the debut of Xiaomi’s selfie series

Xiaomi previously teased an upcoming series of selfie centric smartphones which will be launched in India. Today happens to be the day of the launch, and the company has debuted a smartphone along with a lesser variant to kick off its selfie series.

Introducing the Redmi Y1, first of its name. Xiaomi’s Redmi branded smartphones are the more affordable bunch among its range of already affordable handsets. Apart from the fact that it will be focused on selfies, the Redmi Y1 also runs on Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9 beta software, which will mean improvement and more optimization over the older MIUI 8 software on Xiaomi smartphones.

The Redmi Y1 sports a 5.5-inch display at 720p HD resolution. A Snapdragon 435 octa core processor powers the device, along with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM with 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage respectively. While the Redmi Y1’s rear camera is only a standard 13MP shooter, its front facing camera is more exceptional at 16 megapixels, with an LED selfie light to brighten pictures up.

There is also a Lite variant of the Redmi Y1 which features a less powerful Snapdragon 425 processor and 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of storage. Apart from that, the rest of the specs are pretty much the same across the board, including the 3,080mAh battery.

The Redmi Y1 will be sold in India beginning with a price tag of INR 8,999 (RM 589.36). The Lite version will carry a price of INR 6,999 (RM 458.36).
