What designates a smartphone into which class they belong to are their chipsets – slower chipsets for budget smartphones and powerful chips for flagship devices.

With the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro set to debut this August 29, Xiaomi has gone on to confirm the chipsets that these devices will be equipped with – the Redmi Note 8 with a Snapdragon 665 and the Note 8 Pro with the new Mediatek Helio G90T.

If chipsets are indicators of the devices class, then the Note 8 would be smack dab in the middle of the mid-range segment, while the Note 8 Pro sits at the high mid-range crowd. Brand Manager Lu Weibing took to Weibo to make the announcement, so it’s confirmed that the Note 8 Pro will be first to use the Helio G90T – which is a gaming-centric chipset.

The chipset is able to support a 64MP camera, meaning rumours suggesting the Note 8 Pro to sport on of the sort is confirmed too. So, it will be little surprise if we see Samsung’s Bright ISOCELL GW1 64MP sensor make its way into the Note 8 Pro. Meanwhile, the regular Note 8 will most likely come with a 48MP camera – however it is unsure if they will stick to the Sony IMX586 or the Samsung Bright GM2.

The previous Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro were fantastic phones with reasonable price tags. It looks like the new iterations are set to be significant improvements over the old.
