Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 835 chipset with Samsung's 10nm process

Now that 2016 is coming to an end, we will be expecting a new series of processors by chip making giants such as Qualcomm, with much attention upon the more flagship processors. The Snapdragon 820 proved to be probably the most popular flagship processor of 2016, being equipped in many top of the line smartphones from different manufacturers. The Snapdragon 821 is a slight upgrade from the 820, probably half a step up from the latter. Earlier today, Qualcomm and Samsung have jointly announced a new processor, and it is slated to be underneath the hoods of flagship handsets in 2017.

You would think that the new Qualcomm processor would be named the Snapdragon 830, but Qualcomm has skipped the usual flow by calling it the Snapdragon 835 instead. The Snapdragon 835 is manufactured on Samsung’s revolutionary 10nm FinFET process. In comparison, this year’s Snapdragon 820 and 821 chipsets were manufactured on a 14nm process. The new 10nm process by Samsung will significantly improve performance and power efficiency.

According to Qualcomm, Samsung’s new 10nm FinFET process gives 30 percent more area efficiency, 27 percent improvement in performance and up to 40 percent less in terms of power consumption when compared to this year’s Snapdragon 820 series chips. With a smaller space occupied by the chipset, Qualcomm claims that smartphone manufacturers will have more space to fit larger batteries, or design slimmer phones.

The new processor and its cutting edge process will definitely bring improvement to the whole smartphone experience next year, but the improvements mentioned earlier are mostly raw measurements and theoretical results on paper, hence us and consumers will be the judge when the Snapdragon 835 goes to work in 2017.
