ProtonMail, the e-mail service that encrypts a user’s e-mail end-to-end, is now available to the public after a two-year, invitation-only beta.

Created by scientists from CERN and MIT, ProtonMail was first created when Edward Snowden revealed the NSA’s PRISM program to the world. As e-mails send via ProtonMail is encypted end-to-end, these e-mails can’t be accessed by anyone other than the intended receipient. Furthermore, ProtonMail and its servers are located in Switzerland, meaning that the U.S. government couldn’t shut it down even if it wanted to.

Of course, that is not to say that ProtonMail did not receive its fair share of bad publicity. Leaked documents shows that the service was highly popular with terrorist groups such as ISIS. “Unfortunately, technology does not distinguish between good and bad, so the same technology that protects democracy activists and dissidents can unfortunately also protect terorrists,” says a statement that was released shortly after the document leaked.

For those who are interested, you can sign up for ProtonMail here. You can also download the app on the Apple Store and the Android Play Store now.
