PLUS has announced that all its 83 closed toll systems will go live on the first of April – bringing to fruition the company’s three-year project to evolve our local toll system into a cashless one.
The tolls will stretch along the Peninsula Malaysia including the LPT2 highway along the East Coast. Malaysians had a taste of RFID in action at PLUS’ 10 open toll plazas earlier this alongside free fitment programs for the RFID tags.
With this, a total of 137 RFID lanes will be active come 1 April – you can visit the RFID fitment centres listed here and use your Touch ‘n Go eWallet to pay for your fares.
Previously, PLUS closed all Touch ‘n Go top-up lanes during the Chinese New Year period this year to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of cards with insufficient money from passing through – according to reports, it worked, citing a drop in up to 1.3% in the central region, and up to 3.2% in the northern region in the number of insufficient balance issues.
This was an early sign of PLUS and Touch ‘n Go’s intentions to create a cashless toll ecosystem in the country. The tried-and-tested physical cards and SmartTAG payment methods still work of course, and there are several zero top-up fee vendors available now that won’t impose a surcharge when you reload.
Visit PLUS’ website here for the list of fitment centres, and Touch ‘n Go’s website here for a list of zero surcharge reload locations.
