Perodua launches all-new Axia with autonomous safety features, priced from RM38,600

Malaysia’s most popular national compact hatchback has gotten a new look and upgrade, as Perodua has unveiled the second-generation Axia to the media today.

Based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform that’s also being used on the Alza and Ativa, the Axia is equipped with the same 1.0-litre mill as its predecessor but mated to a D-CVT gearbox, it delivers an impressively claimed fuel efficiency of 27.4km/l with the Eco Idle Start Stop system.

Like other Perodua models, the new Axia comes with a suite of autonomous driver safety assistance features on the top range AV variant, this includes pre-collision warning and braking, lane departure warning and prevention, auto high-beam assist and more.

More impressively, all variants of the Axia will come with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist and Perodua’s Smart Drive assist, while the car scores a four-star rating from ASEAN NCAP.

Inside the new Axia, the SE and AV variants get comfy semi-bucket seats with fabric and semi-leather and stitching upholstery treatments respectively, while the entry G and X variants get standard fabric seats. The AV variant gets the best infotainment treatment with a 9-inch touchscreen head unit that comes with USB and HDMI inputs, though unfortunately it doesn’t support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the rest of the variants get a standard head unit with MP3 and Bluetooth playback support.

To date, the new Axia has received over 20,100 bookings, which out of 13,600 of them were converted from orders of the previous model, Perodua has targeted 5,700 units to be sold monthly and 82,000 targeted units to be produced annually.

The 2023 Perodua Axia is now available in showrooms with color options of Granite Grey, Lava Red, Glittering Silver, Ivory White and the signature and new Coral Blue color across all variants, Perodua’s GearUp optional accessories are also offered on the new Axia.
