Seems like the news of foldable smartphones have died down since the Samsung Galaxy Fold broke down almost immediately after being used. That’s not the end of it though — we still have the HUAWEI’s Mate X and more recently, OPPO’s new patent on its own foldable smartphone.

Similar to the HUAWEI Mate X, the new patent from OPPO shows that the foldable phone also folds outwards, but one advantage it has over all the other foldable smartphones? An elevating camera.

The one problem that many foldable smartphones face is the camera setups when they’re folded. They’re solution is to place more cameras on the front, but OPPO decided to skip that and instead introduce elevating camera so that even as a foldable smartphone, the device can come with full display and no notch.

Based on the patent, it seems like this elevating mechanism will also be housing two cameras paired with a flash. As it works as a selfie camera in its unfolded state, users will have to fold the phone when it comes to using the elevating camera as a rear shooter.
