What to know about OPPO’s innovative retractable camera

OPPO showed off a prototype of its retractable camera at its annual tech convention, OPPO INNO DAY 2021. This innovation could be the solution to slightly reducing the size of the camera bump. The prototype revealed sports a 1/1.56-inch 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor with an aperture of f/2.4.

You can check out a hands-on video of the prototype below:

As you can see, the camera remains retracted and only extends out when the Camera app is launched, even then, the time taken for the camera to load is the same as any other smartphone with a non-retractable camera.

This 50MP sensor offers a 2x optical zoom function which allows users to capture more details along with a superior signal-to-noise ratio, meaning you can get quality shots even in low-light environments. The sensor also offers natural-looking portrait selfies because of better subject and hair separation.

If you’re worried about its durability, OPPO has already clarified this in the video above; the retractable camera will be waterproof and dust resistant and it’ll even retract automatically in 0.6 seconds if the user accidentally drops it.

Apart from that, OPPO also showcased the OPPO Find N, Air Glass, and MariSilicon X NPU during its annual tech convention. There’s no word on when OPPO will be releasing a smartphone with its retractable camera technology but we’ll be sure to update you on any changes.
