Back in 2014, OnePlus launched its first device, the OnePlus One. It was dubbed the flagship killer by the company that was founded by Carl Pei and former Oppo Vice President, Pete Lau. The “flagship killer”, which sported flagship specs at a low price point, was testing the consumer market and it wasn’t a fairytale success. OnePlus had issues with their controversial invite-system – always running out of invites. Not only that, the overwhelming demand caused the company to delay their manufacturing of the OnePlus One, due to the fact that they only produce them according to the number of invites.

Nevertheless, fast forward to 2016, where OnePlus is tipped to launched the OnePlus 3, their fourth smartphone after the OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X. In an interview with CNET, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei stated that the OnePlus 3 is expected to launch at the end of the second quarter. Pei admitted that the OnePlus 2 wasn’t as captivating as the OnePlus One, although the second generation “flagship killer” sold more devices compared to its predecessor.

The OnePlus One, had similar specs to that of the Samsung Galaxy S5, and managed to put up quite a fight for a company that has been found less than six months back then. The OnePlus 2 however, didn’t really wow the crowd as much as the One after all the hype that it created. Carl Pei is hoping that the OnePlus 3 will have the same effect and reception from users when they launched the One.

Pei went on to say that the US market is very important for OnePlus and they will start using more traditional marketing strategies. The company has been slowly loosening up on their invite-only system with the OnePlus X only using invites for three months. We might be looking at a “not so exclusive” OnePlus 3 as OnePlus is tipped to ditch the controversial system once and for all. Let us know your thoughts below!
