It has been over 18 months since both OnePlus and CyanogenMod parted ways due to a controversy involving CyanogenMod agreeing to an exclusive deal with Indian OEM Micromax in the country. Both OnePlus and CyanogenMod have announced the short lived partnership more than two years ago in January 2014. CyanogenMod is one of the better known custom ROM’s in the Android community, with a huge developer base.
Despite the unfortunate split between OnePlus and CyanogenMod, the ROM community have still been working hard to make CyanogenMod software available for OnePlus devices. CM14, CyanogenMod’s custom ROM based on the latest Android Nougat is now officially available for the OnePlus 3 in nightlies. CM ROM’s have been highly regarded among Android geeks and modders for its clean interface and customizability, though you need to root your device to install a custom ROM. The good news is, rooting a OnePlus device won’t void its warranty, such as the case with the OnePlus 3.
For those of you who are familiar with CyanogenMod, you would know what to expect with CM14, along with new features from Android Nougat. CyanogenMod does come with a slew of useful features such as brightness control by sliding across the status bar, being able to tweak clock and battery icons, and the ability to change the theme and look of the software. Do bear in mind that these are nightlies, and not the stable version of CM14. Nightlies are still filled with bugs and other quirks that are still a work in progress, but they are usually stable enough to be used.
As usual, make sure you are confident enough of the required steps for rooting your device and flashing a ROM, and don’t forget to backup your data before attempting to do so. Are you using a CyanogenMod ROM? Let us know your thoughts at the comments section below!
