Oculus reverts decision to lock out Vive support for Oculus games

Oculus’ decision to restrict its games to only run on the Rift headset has proven to be highly unpopular. It was so unpopular that the creators of the Revive tool, which allows Vive users to play Oculus-based games, to create a version of Revive that cracks the Oculus’ DRM just so Vive owners can continue playing Oculus games. After weeks of non-stop grief aimed at Oculus, the company has decided that they’ve had enough, and they have silently removed the headset exclusivity check in an update that came out over the weekend.

The removal of this particular DRM wasn’t published in the runtime update notes of course. Oculus’ removal of the headset check was only found out by the head developer of Revive as a post on the tool’s GitHub page reveals that Oculus has “removed the headset check from the DRM in Oculus Runtime 1.5.” Furthermore, Oculus has since confirmed to Ars Technica that the hardware check has been removed and Oculus “will not use hardware checks as part of DRM on PC in the future.”

With Oculus-based games no longer being locked to the Rift headset, the creators of Revive has since removed the DRM-circumventing version of Revive.
