Nintendo has filed a very interesting patent quite recently as the company has filed a patent on a gamepad design where a touchscreen would cover the entire front panel.

The patent for the gamepad is suspected to be due to Nintendo’s upcoming console, the NX. According to Japanese news portals, there are rumours that Nintendo will be utililsing Sharp’s free-form displays in a future product, so it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think that said future product will be the NX’s controller.

Judging by the early sketches of of the controller, the usual front facing buttons would be replaced by a touchscreen. Other controller elements such as the analog sticks and shoulder buttons will still be available on the controller.

The Wall Street Journal has heard that the NX would include a “mobile unit” that could be used separately from the main console. Seeing as the controller does come with a card slot, it’s is possible that you could play NX titles solely on the gamepad, much like the Wii U.

Regardless, this patent does not mean that the NX controller’s design has been finalised. It does make for a very interesting concept though.
