Netflix stops supporting AirPlay due to “technical limitations”

Netflix is removing AirPlay functionality for iOS users, but while many believe that it’s a sign of retaliation against Apple and its launch of Apple TV+, the former stated that it’s actually due to “technical limitations”.

Due to Apple allowing third-party TVs to support AirPlay, it has become difficult for Netflix to differentiate between Apple TVs and other TVs, causing Netflix to be unable to “certify these experiences”.

“Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices,” said the company.

With the support of AirPlay on other TVs, Netflix is unable to guarantee the app experience to ensure that the viewing quality are up to standards. While it seems like an issue that can be resolved, a Netflix spokesperson hinted that Apple is the real decision maker in the situation.
