Some of you have probably heard about Micromax, and some of you haven’t. The Indian manufacturer had some light shed on it due to its dispute-triangle alongside Chinese startup OnePlus and Cyanogen Inc, in which Micromax claimed it had exclusive rights to Cyanogen OS, a custom ROM for its smartphones in India. The dispute was solved nearly a year ago. Indian citizens seem to be loyal to local smartphone manufacturers, with Micromax taking second place in last year’s smartphone market share, right behind Korean OEM Samsung.
Micromax has pushed things further with the launch of its latest flagship line, the Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro. You’d be expecting the Pro version to literally be a “Pro” variant of the Canvas 6, but that isn’t entirely applicable, plus both the devices are of the same price, which is pretty odd. Let’s dig in to their similarities first: both handsets come with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, the same MediaTek Helio X10 SoC and 13MP rear cameras and 3,000mAh batteries.
The difference between both devices see some compromises and corners cut to maintain the same price point. First of all, the Canvas 6 features a unibody all-metal design whereas the Canvas 6 Pro sports a matte plastic build with a removable back cover. The Canvas 6 Pro has 4GB of RAM underneath the hood, one GB more than the Canvas 6’s 3GB of RAM, but have 16GB and 32GB of expandable storage respectively. Furthermore, the Canvas 6 seems more selfie centric, sporting an 8MP selfie shooter, slightly belittling the one found on the Pro variant. Also, the Canvas 6 has an added bonus – a fingerprint sensor below the rear camera whereas the feature is non-existent on the Canvas 6 Pro.
Micromax is always seen as an alternative for budget devices if consumers don’t intend to go for Chinese smartphones. Both the Micromax Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro are attractively priced at Rs.13,999 (RM817.85). However, as usual, they are only limited to the Indian market. Who knows?
