Xiaomi launches yet another cheap and cheerful product today, the long awaited and highly anticipated Mi Band 2, a follow up to the company’s original Mi Band and the heartbeat sensor equipped Mi Band Pulse. This time, the Mi Band 2 not only has a hearbeat sensor, but an additional OLED display, a factor which will definitely sway consumers in Xiaomi’s favor.
The OLED screen, which happens to be scratch resistant glass and anti-fingerprint, can display information such as time, heart rate, step count, distanced walked, calories burned and much more. Users will be able to scroll through the displayed information by lifting their wrist or by tapping the capacitive button on the capsule itself. Xiaomi also claims the pedometer to backed by a military-grade ADI sensor.
Apart from those are the usual functions you’ll see on a fitness band, such as heart rate and pace monitoring while you run, which also can be viewed in real time via the Mi Fit app apart from the Mi Band 2 itself. And yes, it monitors your sleep too, showing light sleep and deep sleep in the app. The fitness band also watches over you and makes sure that you won’t sit or stay idle for too long by giving you a nudge via vibration. You will also be able to push notifications from your phone to the Mi Band 2, like its predecessors via the more reliable and stable 2nd-gen Bluetooth 4.0 technology. Additionally, you’ll be able to unlock your smartphone with the Mi Band 2. Your smartphone can be unlocked instantly when the Mi Band 2 is brought closer to it, so that can be an alternative method to a fingerprint or PIN protected smartphone. However, this feature will only work on most Mi phones plus smartphones running Android 5.0 and above with Bluetooth 4.0.
Summing up the rest of the specs, the Mi Band 2 only weighs at a measly 7 grams. It comes with a larger battery this time with a capacity of 70mAh. The OLED display is said to be power efficient and Xiaomi claims the Mi Band 2 to last up to 20 days, a whopping 55% more battery life than the Mi Band Pulse, which by the way does not sport a display. The Mi Band 2 is also fitted with a more skin-friendly strap this time, made out of Thermoplastic elastomers. Like its predecessors, the Mi Band 2 comes with IP67 certification, which makes it resistant to moderate specks of dust and water immersion below 1m for half and hour. As far as compatibility is concerned, the Mi Band will require a Bluetooth 4.0 connection and will work with devices running at least Android 4.4 Kit Kat or iOS 7.0.
You’ll probably think that the Mi Band 2 will at least double the cost of the original Mi Band but nope, Xiaomi still stays true to what it strives for. The Mi Band 2 carries a price tag of 149 CNY (RM93.91) but do note that the price in RM is a direct conversion from the Chinese Yen. As of now, we haven’t gotten any word for the official Malaysian pricing for the new fitness band by Xiaomi. What do you think of the Mi Band 2? Will it be worth buying?
