Messenger Lite is a stripped down Facebook Messenger

Facebook’s David Marcus has just announced Messenger Lite. a lightweight version of Messenger which won’t take a toll on the memory of entry level and older devices. Facebook’s mobile apps have always been known as memory hoggers and battery drainers. Not only that, the Facebook app itself tends to take up a ton of storage, hence the introduction of Messenger Lite, for a less heavy user experience.

Marcus has specified that this basic version of Messenger is for older Android devices and for devices with lesser storage space. Messenger Lite is also targeted at phones with lower performing chipsets, and also for users with lower internet speeds. Marcus has stated that the initial rollout for Messenger Lite will be headed to Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Venezuela. The app will expand further to other markets after the initial launch phase.

In June 2015, Facebook launched the Facebook Lite app, catered for similar purposes as Messenger Lite. Facebook users began resorting to Messenger after Facebook made the app download mandatory in order to text on Facebook. Messenger Lite is currently available for download at the Play Store if you happen to be under one of the five selected regions for the initial launch.
