MediaTek Helio G80 chipset announced for mid-ranged gaming smartphones

MediaTek is making the right moves in the mobile gaming scene with the introduction of the Helio G series chipsets. The G90 sits on the premium end of the spectrum, powering the likes of the Redmi Note 8 Pro; while the new Helio G70 is the more budget-friendly option, which will be equipped by the upcoming Realme C3.

Now, MediaTek is completing the line-up with the introduction of the Helio G80 – which sits snuggly in the middle. The new chip is built on the 12nm process boasting an octa-core CPU system (2x Cortex-A75 cores @ 2.0GHz alongside 6x Cortex-A55 @ 1.8GHz. This chip is essentially a higher clocked version of the Helio G70.

For graphics, ARM Mali G52 GPU that has a max clock of 950MHz. It supports up to 8GB LPDDR4 memory, solidifying it as a mid-ranged gaming chip. Meanwhile the higher-end G90 supports up to 10GB of RAM.

Like the other Helio G-series chips, it employs the MediaTek’s HyperEngine feature that helps optimize performance and minimizing latency when gaming.

For imaging it supports 48MP cameras and video capture of up to 2K at 30FPS or 1080p at 60FPS.

With the Dimensity-series chipsets announced for the 5G market, MediaTek looks ready for 2020 and it’ll be an interesting year for smartphones, especially in the mid-range and budget segment.
