Mediatek announces the Helio G90 gaming focused SoC

MediaTek is now getting into the gaming smartphone scene with the new Helio G90 and G90T system-on-chip, these chips feature Cortex-A76 and A55 cores that is commonly found on Qualcomm’s higher end chipsets with up to 2.05GHz of clock speed, graphics is powered by a Mali G76 GPU with a 800MHz clock speed and have support for up to 10GB LPDDR4X RAM.

MediaTek is including a “HyperEngine” technology on the Helio G90 that is designed to boost performance of smartphone games, it will also support HDR10 and an intelligent network detection engine that switches over to LTE when WiFi signal is weak, there is also a ‘rapid response’ engine to make touchscreens more responsive.

By all means, it doesn’t look like the G90 is set to overtake the performance of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chip, since the latter has a significantly faster clock speed at 2.96GHz.

However, MediaTek has said that it is looking to offer the Helio G90 to companies that manufacture gaming phones like the ROG Phone or Razer Phone, to put it simply, it intends to rival Qualcomm’s powered gaming phones by offering a cheaper and decent performance chipset.

MediaTek chips haven’t always been well-received in the flagship level, they are still more commonly found in mid-tier Chinese devices due to their low cost, but let’s hope we are able to see the Helio G90 being a capable contender to the more expensive Snapdragon chips.
