LG G6 to revert from modular design

LG took a whole new different approach this year with its flagship handset. The LG G5 was launched sporting a pretty innovative modular design, in which LG’s own modular accessories, dubbed “LG Friends” were sold accordingly. Not too long ago, there were claims whereby the upcoming LG G6 will retain the modular design from the G5, but South Korean news outlet ET News’ latest report suggests otherwise.

As cool as a modular phone may sound, it seems that LG G5 users didn’t find the need for LG’s modular accessories, such as its camera and audio modules. This phenomenon results in LG Friends selling poorly. But ultimately, LG’s rumored decision to take a step back with the G6 is due to the fact that the sales of this year’s G5 were low. One of the contributing factors of the LG G5’s poor sales comes from production issues, as claimed by ET News.

The report further states that the Korea manufacturer has conceded that the LG G5 wasn’t a success. But it is also said that internally, LG Electronics is worried that the plan to ditch the modular format for the LG G6 will make matters even worse. Lenovo-owned Motorola has also opted for a modular design for its Moto Z series, with its Moto Mods. Time will tell whether the next generation of flagship smartphones will head towards the modular direction. LG is certainly in a difficult position, but we do hope that the company will not disappoint us with its next flagship. What do you think?
