Apple to rename iOS to iPhoneOS: Real or a joke?

Apple’s iOS 14 is about to debut but ahead of its launch, recent reports are suggesting that Apple will be changing its name from iOS to iPhoneOS.

It’s a joke…right?

A “leaked” video on reddit posted by a user under the handle notpwign showed a very Apple-style video and in that video, iOS will be rebranded to iPhoneOS and there will be nothing new except for a wallpaper. Max Weinbach from XDA Developers also shared this video on his Twitter, but leaker Ben Geskin’s reply indicated that it’s a joke. In addition, the wallpaper that appeared in the video is actually a photo uploaded by Rodio Kutsaev on Unsplash, a photo sharing platform.

Jon Prosser from Front Page Tech tweeted “iPhone OS” two days ago with no further elaborations. There’s a possibility that Apple will change the name, especially since iPadOS was introduced last year, so iOS is covering a smaller range of devices now.

iPhoneOS is not new

Apple started with the name iPhoneOS way back but changed it to iOS in June 2010. Now that the different products have their own software version (watchOS, tvOS, iPadOS), perhaps changing iOS to iPhoneOS is reasonable.

What to expect from iOS/iPhoneOS 14

It’s just a matter of hours before we can confirm the new updates in iOS/iPhoneOS 14, but reports up till the time of writing have suggested new wallpaper options, widget supports on the home screen, new app switcher layout and a new fitness app.
