iPhone 13 lineup launched from RM3,399; Malaysia pre-order starts October 1

The latest Apple Event has revealed the iPhone 13 lineup featuring the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. All four devices are now powered by the A15 Bionic Chip and comes with upgraded display and camera systems.

Display

The new iPhone 13 phones all have an upgraded Super Retina XDR Display with higher brightness and support HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG. These displays are all protected by Apple’s Ceramic Shield that was introduced with the iPhone 12. However, the Pro models still have the advantage over the iPhone 13 and 13 mini as they’ll now support Apple’s ProMotion that offers up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

Design

Design-wise, the new iPhones sport a smaller notch — 20% smaller than the notch on previous models. Based on earlier leaks, the smaller notch will allow more information to be shown at the top of the display, for example, the battery percentage of the phone. The iPhone 13 also have a new camera arrangement; users will now get a diagonal dual-camera arrangement instead of the vertical arrangement. All the phones still sport an IP68 rating which makes them dust and water resistant.

Performance

The new A15 Bionic chip promises 50% faster CPU performance and 30% faster GPU performance when you compare the iPhone 13 to its competitor. Though Apple did not specifically mention who is the leading competition, it’s safe to assume that it’s either the Snapdragon 888 or Snapdragon 888+ chipset. The iPhone 13 comes with a 4-core GPU while the iPhone 13 Pro sports a 5-core GPU, so the Pro model is even better when it comes to graphic performance. Apple also mentioned that the image and video processing is improved with the new Bionic chip.

Camera

The camera system on all the iPhones have been improved; the iPhone 13 and 13 mini have a 12MP wide sensor with f/1.6 aperture and a 12MP ultra wide sensor with f/2.4 aperture. Apple also introduced the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s sensor-shift OIS feature to the iPhone 13. This is also brought over to the iPhone 13 Pro models, but the two phones also have better upgrades — a 77mm telephoto lens that supports 3x optical zoom, an 12MP ultrawide lens with f/1.8 aperture and a 12MP wide lens with f/1.5 aperture.

This time, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max’s ultra-wide lens can be used for macro photography, in addition to Apple adding Night Mode to all three lenses. Apple also revealed Smart HDR 4 and two new features, Cinematic Mode and Photographic Styles. Cinematic Mode is available on all four models; it can automatically transition between subjects, anticipates when the subject is about to enter the frame and stay focused on the subject even when they’re moving. This enables movie-like scenes to be shot just by using the new iPhones. On the other hand, Apple’s Photographic Styles are somewhat like filters that gives you different adjustments in contrast, brightness and so on.

Battery

All four models will have better battery lives; though Apple did not mention the battery specifications, the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro will supposedly last 1.5 hours longer than their predecessors, whereas the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max will last 2.5 hours longer than the previous models.
