HUAWEI to share HarmonyOS with other smartphone manufacturers

We already know that HUAWEI is planning to run HarmonyOS on its own smartphones this year, but now the tech giant says that it’ll share its proprietary OS with other Chinese smartphone makers.

HarmonyOS available to phones without GMS

Director of HUAWEI Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu says that HarmonyOS will be made available to those who are looking to replace GMS. This will benefit Chinese manufacturers who are affected by the U.S. ban and aren’t able to run GMS on their devices. HUAWEI is also reported to be testing out HarmonyOS 2.0 with selected developers, and previous reports revealed that the Mate 40 series will be the first to get the beta update.

HUAWEI will make HarmonyOS laptops in the future

Apart from that, HUAWEI is planning to launch its own Kirin-powered laptop using the Kirin 990 chip. This laptop will also come with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage. It will be a 14-inch laptop that pushes 1080p screen and will also come with 5G connectivity. Unfortunately, it won’t run on HarmonyOS; instead it will run on Linux’s Deepin OS.

Gizchina reported that developer will be able to access over 50 UI controls in HarmonyOS, in addition to barrier-free development framework, over 40 sample codes for reference and more. HarmonyOS may be an interesting competitor to Android and iOS, but we’ll explore the new OS and find out more when the time comes.
