The Huawei P9 and P9 Plus were launched with pretty impressive spec sheets, with a slight controversy down the road regarding the “Leica” dual-camera setup on the rear of the phone. It was discovered that the camera modules were manufactured by Chinese manufacturer Sunny Optical instead, which resulted in a clarification by Leica, explaining that Sunny Optical was authorized by the company to manufacture the components.
Now Huawei has announced a P9 Lite in the UK, with the Leica branding not in sight, and also a single camera on the back alongside a couple more specs which are slightly tame compared to the P9 and P9 Plus. First off, the P9 Lite features a 5.2-inch 1080p display, an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 650 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB of expandable storage underneath the hood. THe handset sports a 13MP camera on the back instead of a dual-camera setup seen on the P9 and P9 Plus, coupled with an 8MP selfie camera on the front. The Leica branding seems to be missing on the back of the device, which tells us that Leica has probably sat out on this phone.
Powering the P9 Lite is a 3,000mAh battery and it features a micro-USB port, a step behind from the USB Type-C port which the P9 and P9 Plus opted for. Thankfully, the P9 Lite sports a fingerprint sensor, which seems to be a must have for smartphones of 2016. What do you think of this tamed down version of the P9?
