Huawei may be developing a China-only digital assistant

Digital assistants are all the rage these days as Samsung is readying Bixby for launch and HMD Global is working on one for the Nokia phones. Now, it appears that Huawei themselves are getting into the digital assistant game, although unlike the other assistants available in the market right now, Huawei’s own offering will be a China-only feature.

According to Bloomberg, several unnamed sources has stated that more than a hundred Huawei engineers are currently working on the voice assistant. While development is still in its early stages, the reports indicate that this digital assistant will mainly be targeted towards China’s domestic market. As such, the digital assistant is expected to communicate in Chinese languages.

Judging from the report, it appears that Huawei devices sold outside of China will not be getting this digital assistant. While we may not be getting this specific digital assistant on our locally sold Huawei phones, Huawei does have plans to include such an assistant on phones that are sold outside of China. For example, Mate 9 owners living in the U.S. will be getting a software update that would give the phone Amazon Alexa support in the future.
