Huawei introduces latest flagship Kirin 960 processor

Huawei continues to strengthen its own line of home grown processors that have been performing impressively underneath the hoods of its recent flagships. The company, apart from being known for its range of dual rear camera smartphones, is also known for making its own processors to operate most of its handsets. The Chinese manufacturer has finally lifted the wraps on its latest flagship processor, the Kirin 960.

The new octa core Kirin 960 chipset consists of four high performing ARM Cortex-A73 cores and four lower powered Cortex-53 cores. According to Geekbench tests conducted by Huawei, the Kirin 960 is said to triumph over all current flagship SoC’s in the multi core test, scoring an impressive 6300 points. On the single core test, the Kirin 960 managed to edge out the rest of the competition with the exception of Apple’s A10 chip which seems miles ahead in terms of score. The Geekbench tests were performed comparing the Kirin 960 to the likes of Huawei’s older Kirin 950, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821, Samsung’s Exynos 8890 and Apple’s A10.

The Kirin 960’s GPU has received a bigger upgrade compared to its CPU counterpart, sporting Mali-G71 MP8 GPU, in which in GFXBench Manhattan and T-Rex performed better than the Snapdragon 820’s GPU, but still falling behing the powerful A10. The new GPU is said to power a new level of high end graphics technology, on top of its energy efficiency. The new Kirin SoC also supports UFS 2.1 flash memory and LPDDR4 RAM. Network wise, the chipset supports LTE Cat 12 and Cat 13.

The Kirin 960 is slated to be powering the Huawei Mate 9 which is rumored to launch real soon. The launching of this chipset tells us what do expect from the upcoming Mate 9, apart from the rest of its beastly specs. What do you think?
