Honda recently developed a GPS navigation device that can be attached to your shoes. This is to help visually impaired individuals reach their destinations safely through the use of vibrations.
This Honda product will bring GPS navigation to your shoes
The GPS device can be attached to any shoe and comes with a motion sensor to determine the user’s position. It also has several vibrating points – for example, the device will vibrate at the front if you’re supposed to walk forward, or left/right if you need to make a turn.
The device also works with a smartphone application which is needed to set your destinations the device can start the navigation process. In addition, the visually impaired will still be able to listen for surrounding noises and use their walking canes without being distracted.
While the device is still a work in progress, it is expected to be completed and released by the first quarter of 2023. Perhaps this technology can be brought to other wearables like smartwatches in the future.
