Here’s how much SST will affect the prices of tech gadgets

For the past two months, Malaysians have been given a tax holiday and therefore, brands have taken advantage to lower the prices of goods in hopes of increasing sales revenue. In another a week, the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will finally come into force on almost every item you buy, which unfortunately the electronics and gadgets we love will also be subjected to it.

According to a document published by the Malaysian Customs, the following items are subjected to the SST:

  • Handphone – 5%
  • Laptops – 5%
  • Digital Camera – 10%
  • DSLR Camera – 10%
  • Headphone – 10%
  • Wrist-watch – 10%

While SST is only implemented during the import process of the item, it would also mean increased cost for the brand and eventually passed down to the consumer, hence we should expect a certain increment in prices of the items mentioned above.

Now, you might be thinking what to buy before the tax holiday is over, fortunately we have been tipped with some deals happening at Shopee at its Pre-SST sales campaign happening on 23rd August, and here are some of the items that we think its a pretty good deal:-

HP DeskJet 2622 All-in-One Wireless Printer – RM145.50 (UP: RM209)

Huawei Nova 2i – RM759 (UP: RM1,099)

Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB – RM265 (UP: RM399)

BenQ 21.5″ GW2280 Eye-Care Monitor – RM299 (UP: 368.40)

There you go, do take advantage of the deals right now before its too late, and do drop us a tip too if you have found out any good deals you have discovered on the Internet.
