Google Assistant has a new Song Recognition feature

Google Assistant has been updated to bring a feature that most of us are waiting for. In Pixel phones, Google was able to tell what song is playing just by picking up what is playing without any interaction. On Assistant, this feature took just a small step back where you will have to ask what song is playing for it to pick up the song in the background.

To activate this feature, users will just have to ask “What song is playing?”, or “Which song is this?” or any similar words. Assistant will then show a sound wave and all there is to it, is allow it to pick up the song and it will tell you the artist, song name and even the lyrics to the song that is playing. Other voice assistants have already adopted this feature, like Alexa using Shazam to identify songs, but it looks like Google is using their own methods to identify the song.

I did some tests on this feature and found it to take roughly 5 seconds to find a song which is quite impressive. In addition to that, it also managed to find songs that are not part of the mainstream music, some of which Shazam and Soundhound could not find. The feature looks to be available in Malaysia already, so if you have an Assistant enabled phone, take this feature out for a spin.
