Google is looking to lay yet another undersea cable, and this time they’re teaming up with Facebook and Pacific Light Data Communications to do it.
Dubbed the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN), this new trans-Pacific undersea cable will be 12,000-ish kilometer, and will run from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. The PLCN would be Google’s sixth submarine cable in which the company has a stake in. Other submarine cables that Google has a stake in includes Unity, SJC, FASTER, Monet and Tannat projects.
When completed, the PLCN will be capable of transmitting 120 terabits of data per second, making it the highest capacity trans-Pacific undersea connection available. Google believes that the PLCN will be able to support 80 million concurrent HD video conference calls between Hong Kong and Los Angeles. The construction of the cable will also improve the connection quality between Southeast Asian internet users and websites hosted in the United States.
