Gmail to drop support for older versions of Chrome by the end of 2017

If you’re a Gmail user who’s still using an older version of Google’s Chrome browser, do note that Google has announced that Gmail will no longer be supporting versions of Chrome that are older than v53.

Beginning on the 8th of February, a banner will be shown above the Gmail interface for people who are still using Chrome v53 and below. Said banner will encourage users to update to Chrome v55 as soon as possible. Once the cut-off date arrives, all Chrome users who are still stuck with the older versions of Chrome will be redirected to the basic HTML version of Gmail. Doing so will leave Google more vulnerable to security risks and users will not have access to new features and bugfixes. This could occur as early as December 2017.

The announcement that Google will be ceasing support for older versions of Chrome is particularly important for those who are still on Windows XP or Windows Vista as the latest version of Chrome on both operating systems is Chrome v49. If your computer is still running on either OS, perhaps the time is right to upgrade to a newer one.
