Firaxis Games partners up with GlassLab to develop CivilizationEDU

Following the footsteps of Minecraft, Take-Two Interactive, 2K and Firaxis Games has announced that they will be partnering up with GlassLab, a nonprofit learning company, to develop a modified version of Sid Meier’s Civilizations V to American schools by the fall of 2017.

This version of Civilizations V, aptly named CivilizationsEDU, will provide students with the opportunity to think critically and create historical events, consider and evaluate the geopgraphical ramifications of their economic and technological decisions, and to engage in systems thinking and experiment with the causal/correlative relationships between military, technology, political and socioeconomic development.

For the teacher’s side of things, CivilizationsEDU will feature an analytics engine to capture students’ progress and asses their problem-solving skills. Teachers will also gain access to an online dashboard that will track the students’ progress in the game. CivilizationEDU will also include an in-depth gameplay guide and lesson plans that are “aligned to academic and 21st century standards.”

“For the past 25 years, we’ve found that one of the fun secrets of Civilization is learning while you play. We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with GlassLab and I am excited to see CivilizationEDU in classrooms next year,” says Sid Meier, Founder and Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games.
