Facebook Malaysia launches new office expansion to bring forward community-first services

Facebook Malaysia has today unveiled their brand-spanking new expanded office in Q Sentral. The original was built back in 2016, and three years on, Facebook is expanding their space in the country as they look to also bolster workforce.

Facebook Malaysia’s role in the region is to help businesses engage with mobile-first consumers. With products such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, Facebook are undoubtedly a powerhouse in connecting to consumers – during the presentation, VP of Asia Pacific for Facebook Dan Neary mentioned that 23 million users access Facebook on a monthly basis and that’s a massive base to tap into.

In the launch event that was initiated by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as well as YB Tuan Gobing Singh Deo, Facebook say that the office expansion is an investment from the American company in the country to bring forward a community that is connected digitally, as well as to spearhead economic growth in Malaysia.

Part of this effort can be seen with the introduction of Terragraph in Georgetown, Penang a few months ago. Terragraph brings gigabit bandwidth to the historic heritage town. In cooperation with YES, Facebook aims to push broadband speeds to world-beating levels in the hopes of helping Malaysia grow economically via training of entrepreneurs.

Nicole Tan also says that a new Terragraph trial will take place in Cyberjaya soon, further expanding coverage of the technology.

In 2019, Facebook aims to bring Facebook Community Circles which allows community leaders to learn from the community. With all these efforts, Facebook has grown beyond a social media brand, but an organization that put communities first – the new expanded office is a signal of bigger things to come from the company as the local team grows.
