Facebook begins testing end-to-end encrypted secret conversations

Much like other chat platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook’s Messenger will be getting end-to-end encryption as the company begins testing on an experimental Messenger feature.

For those of you lucky enough to be selected to test out this new feature, you’ll be able to start sending end-to-end encrypted “secret conversations” through the app. Unlike standard end-to-end encryption systems where messages are only visible to the sender and the recipient, Facebook’s Messenger system has an added layer of security. For Messenger, encrypted messages can only be read on one specific device.

Alongside the end-to-end encryption, you can also send timed messages to your friends. You can set a timer to any selected messages to your friend. Once the time limit on the messages are up, said messages will be automatically deleted. That said, once these features are made available during summer, all of the features are purely on an opt-in basis, meaning that you won’t be forced to encrypt your messages if you don’t want to.
