The Exynos 980 is Samsung’s latest processor with an integrated 5G modem

Samsung announced its latest processor that also happens to be its first mobile processor that has an integrated 5G modem — the Exynos 980.

The Exynos 980 is a processor fabricated on an 8nm FinFET process where it has two Cortex-A77 CPU cores and six Cortex-A55 cores. It also comes with Mali-G76 GPU and can now support the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, IEEE 802.11ax.

The processor will not only have 5G support but will also be more space-efficient and less power-consuming. With its 5G modem, the processor is able to offer a fast gigabit downlink speed in 4G LTE and also maximize mobile downlink speed of up to 3.55Gbps.

Simply put, the processor offers higher on-device intelligence where AI tasks can be processed in the device itself instead of relying on servers for higher security and data protection. It can operate multiple apps smoothly and also run high-resolution graphics games, in addition to supporting up to 108MP camera resolution. The Exynos 980 can also support up to five individual sensors and with the help of its NPU, it can utilize its AI technology for scene and object detections to optimize its settings. The processor’s MFC also included encoding and decoding of 4K UHD video at 120fps, in addition to HDR10+ for higher color vibrancy.

According to Samsung, the processor will begin has production by the end of this year, so it’s probably a matter of months before we see the new processor integrated into Samsung’s devices.
