Epic launches Unreal Engine 4.27; and rolls out support for local creators to boost digital content industry

Epic Games has just released the latest version of Unreal Engine 4.27, and it comes with plenty of improvements for video game developers and content creators.

Improved in-camera VFX workflows

3D Config Editor allows users to easily design their nDisplay setups for LED volumes and other multi-rendering app combining all related settings into a single nDisplay Root Actor for easier access.

There’s also multi-GPU support now that lets nDisplay make use of the extra rendering power and scale more efficiently, as well as maximise resolution on wide shots.

Virtual Camera has been enhanced to support more features such as Multi-User Editing, and Live Link Vcam, which is an iOS app that enables a new app for iOS that lets users drive a Cine Camera in-engine using an iPad.

Improved GPU Lightmass

The feature uses GPU rendering to leverage new ray tracing capabilities with DirectX 12 and DXR framework.

GPU Lightmass deduces the amount of time taken to generate lighting data for scenes that require global illumination, soft shadows, and other complex lighting effects.

Path Tracer

This is a DXR-accelerated rending mode in Unreal Engine that can be nabled without any additional setup.

The new update brings physically-correct global illumination, refractions, and feature-complete materials within these lighting effects.

RAD Game Tools

Oodle Compression Suite and Bink Video codec are new built into Unreal Engine, putting super-fast compression and encoding tools into the hands of developers, for free.

Aiding local developers and creators

The brand is also rolling out support for local creators by democratising access to next-generation technology with the free-to-download Unreal Engine; offering a wide gamut of online training initiatives, and development courses to help users get acquainted with the engine.

Epic is also enabling greater access to talent and expertise across the network of Unreal creators. MegaGrants is also another initiative to help developers attain capital and funding to carry out their projects using Unreal.
