Chinese OEM’s have been known to emphasize a lot on spec sheets, and Vivo brings that trademark to a whole new level, launching a smartphone with 6GB of RAM. We have just received rumors of the device recently, and they were right. Introducing the Vivo XPlay5, the first smartphone sporting 6GB of RAM.
Not only that, the Vivo XPlay5 also features a dual-edge display, confirming claims that they are using Samsung’s display. At 5.43 inches, it is a Super AMOLED display with QHD resolution. However, the dual-edge display doesn’t seem to make the cut as the XPlay5 doesn’t feature an edge interface like on Samsung’s Galaxy Edge line. Other specs include a Snapdragon 820 processor, 128GB of internal storage, a 3,600mAh battery which supports fast charging, dual stereo speakers with Hi-Fi 3.0, a USB Type-C port and a fingerprint scanner. In terms of build, the XPlay5 has a metal unibody design. On the camera side of things, it sports a 16MP/8MP rear and front facing pair.
While it may seem to be up against (in some ways, trump) the Galaxy S7 Edge on paper, whether or not it can live up to the standards of the Samsung flagship in terms of real-life usage remains to be seen. Nevertheless, specs and mimicry at a low price point seem to be what most Chinese OEM’s thrive on to compete against existing flagship devices out there.
According the Vivo, the XPlay5’s fingerprint reader can unlock the device in 0.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds if the screen is awake. The device runs its own FunTouch OS on top of Android Marshmallow and comes in two colors: Champagne Gold or Rose Gold. One thing to note is the XPlay5 comes in two variants. a “Flagship Edition” and an “Ultimate Edition. The “Flagship Edition” runs on a Snapdragon 652 SoC with 4GB of RAM and the latter sports a Snapdragon 820 with 6GB of RAM. The prices stand at 3,698 Yuan (RM2,349) and 4,288 Yuan (RM2,723.77) respectively.
The XPlay5 is available for pre-order right now and is tipped to start selling sometime next week. It is still unlikely that the XPlay5 will pose any form of threat to Samsung’s flagship line although the 6GB of RAM might interest some enthusiasts out there.
