DJI unveils new Mavic 3 drone with dual camera system

DJI has officially unveiled the Mavic 3 today, it is the most powerful consumer drone from the company ever made with significant improved imaging features and flight technologies.

Succeeding the 3-year old Mavic 2, the Mavic 3 comes with a powerful dual camera system that comprise a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad camera and 28x hybrid zoom camera, omnidirectional obstacle sensors that senses objects up to 200 meters, and increased flight time of up to 46 minutes in ideal conditions.

The Mavic 3’s main camera can shoot 20MP still images with 12-bit RAW format and records videos up to 5.1K resolution at 50fps with a maximum bitrate of 200Mbps, it has a 24mm focal range and autofocus to assist pilots in capturing clear photos. As for the tele lens, it takes 12MP still images and records up to 4K resolution at 30fps, pilots can get up to 4x hybrid zoom at 162mm of focal range that is a combination of optical and digital zoom.

Unlike the Mavic 2, there isn’t a Pro model with better cameras but rather, the Mavic 3 comes in a Cine Edition that records in Apple ProRes 422 HQ format with up to 3772Mbps of bitrate and comes with a 1TB SSD storage.

Pilots can now be more confident in flying the Mavic 3 in complexed environments all thanks to APAS 5.0, which combines inputs from six fish-eye vision sensors and two wide-angle sensors that continuously senses obstacles in all directions, which enables the drone to intelligently avoid obstacles in flight plans and return to home safely.

In addition, DJI claims that APAS 5.0 enables better subject tracking on the Mavic 3 with the upgraded ActiveTrack 5.0 feature, the drone can follow the subject as it moves forward, backward, left, right and diagonally, as well as flying alongside the subject. Even if the subject moves too fast and temporarily goes out of the frame, the visual sensors will continue to track and pick it up immediately when it reappears.

The Mavic 3 gets an upgraded wireless transmission system that’s now known as the DJI O3+, which gives up to a maximum transmission range of 15km and comes with an optional cellular transmission dongle that allows pilots to use 4G networks to connect to the drone when they lose signal to the O3+ connection due to interference, it offers up to 1080p live view streaming at 60fps, enabling an extremely detailed and smooth experience that isn’t possible on previous models.

Starting today, the DJI Mavic 3 can be purchased at the DJI official store and we should expect a local launch to happen soon, here are the following configuration and pricing details:
